The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, You’re the Worst, and Utopia

black-ish has cast Jenifer Lewis (Meet the Browns, Strong Medicine) to play Dre’s (Anthony Anderson) overbearing mom in a recurring role. Lewis’ character Ruby is described as follows: “She smothers pork chops with gravy, Dre with love, and would like to flat out smother [Dre’s wife] Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), who feels the same way about her.” She will make her first appearance later this season. http://tvline.com/2014/09/30/black-ish-cast-jenifer-lewis-anthony-anderson-mother/

-Fox is remaking Big. Loosely based on the film, it will tell a new story that explores the line between being a kid and an adult–and how those things are more confused than ever in today’s world. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon will set up shop at the Orpheum Theater in Phoenix following NBC’s telecast of Super Bowl XLIX and a special episode of The Blacklist on Sunday, February 1, 2015. Following the game, Fallon will spend a week in Los Angeles from Feb 2-5–marking the Tonight Show’s first visit west since it returned to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York earlier this year. -Yvonne Strahovski (24) has booked a series regular role on the ABC drama Astronaut Wives Club. She will play Rene Carpenter, who is married to Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter. A mother of four, she’s strong and upfront and enjoys the limelight but is and ready to use it for personal gain. -FX has also ordered comedy pilot Pariah from the guys behind It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. -Netflix has ordered Kong–King of the Apes, an animated children’s series set in 2050 San Francisco. The series is a fresh take on the classic King Kong story, Alcatraz Island has been transformed into a natural history and marine preserve, but chaos ensues when Kong becomes public enemy No. 1. The villian that framed him unleashes an army of gigantic robotic dinosaurs on the world and Kong is the only creature strong enough to stop them. He enlists the help of three young humans, who risk their lives to help Kong evade capture. -Fox has once again cut down on Utopia airings. From now on, the show will only air on Fridays (and has been yanked from Tuesday nights). Instead, Fox is going to launch the second season of Masterchef Junior in the Tuesday 8pm slot starting Nov 4. Next week, Fox will encore its Family Guy/Simpsons crossover episode in the time period, then have animated repeats the following week. -Disney has renewed Star Wars Rebels for second season on Disney XD. Amazon Pilot season, Marco Polo, The Blacklist, Full House, and so much more!

-Netflix has announced that its new original series Marco Polo will have a December 12 premiere date for all 10 episodes. The series is a historical saga which focuses on Polo’s sojourn into 13th-century China, then ruled by Kublai Khan. -Amazon has debuted their third pilot season, where the consumer can screen and then vote on a total of five new projects that are happening. The pilots are now online through Amazon Instant Video. -Warner Bros. TV is eyeing a possible revival of the hit show Full House. The show may return with some of the original cast intact, including John Stamos, who is actively working to get the show back on the air. The show’s creator Jeff Franklin would pen the revival, with cast members Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, and Andrea Barber each playing a role in the project. Bob Saget and Dave Coulier would also be involved, though it’s unclear in what capacity. -Steve Zahn (Treme, Mind Games, Joy Ride) has joined Modern Family for its sixth season in a key role as the Dunphy’s horrible new neighbor. -Niecy Nash (Reno 911!, Getting On) has joined The Mindy Project as Mindy Lahiri’s nemesis who also happens to be a lesbian. She is described as a tough physician from Boston who is a take-no-prisoners type and puts up with no nonsense whatsoever. -Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy) is set to executive produce a new series Debt, a satire of the 2008 financial meltdown in New York based on Rachel Carey’s 2013 novel of the same name. The project for ABC Family begins a new trend about programs targeted towards older women. The story follows a young woman in her 20s who works as an SAT tutor to pay off her college loans and discovers that everyone she knows is in somebody’s “debt.” The series is in very early pre-production and has not even hired a writer yet. http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/08/01/ellen-pompeo-debt-abc-family-drama/

-Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) will play Deputy Chief Madeline Wuntch as a guest-starring arc on Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine for its second season. Deputy Chief Wuntch is a longtime foil of Andre Braugher’s Captain Holt and she aims to take down the 9-9. Brooklyn Nine-Nine begins its second season on Sunday, September 28 at 8:30/7:30c on Fox. -Nickelodeon is adapting School of Rock for the silver screen! Based of the 2003 Jack Black comedy movie of the same name, the show will follow the misadventures of Dewey Finn, a down-on-his luck musician who fakes his way into a substitute teaching job at a prep school where he shows a group of classically-trained kids the way of Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. The show is on track to air next spring with production beginning in the fall.
