CBS Subscription Service, Mission Control, and The Voice

There is so much news! I probably should have done another post earlier in the week but I was so swamped with midterms (since I’m still in college) that I just didn’t have time. This honestly may have to be 3 posts. Let’s get started! 

-CBS is launching its own subscription service for on-demand consumption for its new TV shows as well as their old ones. Since they are not part of Hulu (jointly owned by ABC, NBC, and Fox) they have been out of the subscription service for awhile and have only focused on their website (which I might add, is not very good compared to Hulu). “CBS All Access” will offer thousands of episodes from many of CBS’ current programs, classic series in its library as well as content from its local-TV station, for $5.99 a month. With the service, anyone who wants to watch CBS shows will be able to do so whether or not they subscribe to a programming package from a video distributor (aka a standalone service). http://variety.com/2014/digital/news/cbs-to-launch-svod-all-access-service-with-current-and-classic-programs-1201331028/

-Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street, Parks and Recreation) is coming to New Girl for the holidays! He will guest-star as a Grinch-like character in the Christmas episode. His character, Barry, a beleaguered airline representative the gang encounter at the airport is tired of dealing with holiday travelers and Christmas itself. -NBC has canceled Mission Control before it has even aired. The show was set for a midseason debut and it starred Kristen Ritter. -Archie Panjabi (who plays Kalinda Sharma) will be leaving The Good Wife at the end of this season, after her contract has ended. She did not renew her contract because she is planning on starring in a drama pilot for CBS in the spring. -A Bewitched remake is eyeing a comeback. There is already interest from multiple networks about a remake. American Horror Story has been renewed for season 5 after the fourth season’s premiere broke FX records, with 10 million total views for the season four opener, the most-watched telecast in the network’s history. -Pharrell Williams is set to return for season 8 of The Voice as a coach. He will coach alongside Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Christina Aguilera, who is coming back from a maternity leave after sitting out the last two season. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has booked Nick Cannon (America’s Got Talent host) for a multi-episode arc. He will play Marcus, Holt’s charming and educated nephew who just moved to the city and will stay with his uncle until he finds his own place. His debut will be sometime in December. Awkward, Public Morals, and Dig

-IFC has renewed The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret for a six-episode third season. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is introducing parents! Sandra Bernhard (Switched at Birth, Roseanne) will debut as Gina’s “eccentric” and “offbeat” mother, Darlene Linetti in the November 9 episode. -Brian Dennehy (Death of a Salesman, Presumed Innocent) and Neal McDonough (Desperate Housewives, Boomtown) have both booked major recurring roles on TNT’s Public Morals. The show is set in 1967 in New York City’s Public Morals Division, where cops walk the line between morality and criminality as the temptations that come from dealing with all kinds of vice that can get the better of them. Dennehy will play Joseph “Big Red” Patton, a powerful mobster who controls the west side of Manhattan. -Showtime has decided to go straight to series with In The Heat of the Night. The show is described as an exploration of character and race set in modern-day Mississippi. It is also based off the 1988 movie of the same name, which starred Carroll O’Connor and Howard E. -Amazon has renewed Transparent for a second season after becoming a number one hit on Amazon Prime Instant Video since its launch two weeks ago. The show  is about a transgendered parent, Maura formerly Mort (Jeffrey Tambor), who comes out to the LA family’s adult kids. The second season is slated to hit Amazon in 2015. The Flash, CW’s new superhero TV series, has cast Victor Garber (Alias) as Dr. Martin Stein, a brilliant but arrogant nuclear physicist who has sacrificed everything, including a marriage, for his work in transmutation. After he discovers the particle accelerator fused him with the younger, more impulsive Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell), he races to find a way to separate the two before it’s too late. -Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars) will join Suits in a guest-starring role as Mike’s ex-flame. She will only appear in flashbacks to Mike’s past as a bike messenger. -Andy Mientus (Smash) has joined The Flash as hearing impaired (and openly gay) DC Comics villian Pied Piper, aka Hartley Hathaway. One of DC’s original rogues, Hartley is a bona fide genius who used to work at S.T.A.R. Labs until a falling out with his mentor, Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh). The particle accelerator robbed Hartley of his hearing, but inspired him to create a series of sonic weapons that he uses in an effort to punish Wells by destroying his new protege: The Flash. Humans, Supergirl, 11/22/63, True Detective and more!

New blog post part 2! 

-AMC has picked up the UK’s show Humans, a co-production deal between Channel 4 and Xbox Entertainment Studios,  but was dropped by Xbox Entertainment Studios over the summer as part of Microsofts’s plan to cut 18,000 jobs. Channel 4 was looking for a U.S. partner and found it in AMC. Production of the sci-fi drama will start this fall for a 2015 premiere. The show is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’–a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart. In the hope of transforming the way they live, one strained suburban family purchases a refurbished synth only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences. -CBS has given a series commitment to an hour-long drama about Kara Zor-El, the DC Comics heroines who escaped the planet Krypton amid its destruction. Having hid all this time on Earth the powers she share with “her famous cousin”, 24-year-old Kara decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and “be the here she was meant to be.” The pilot was penned by Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow). -Hulu has placed a direct-to-series order for 11/22/63, a nine-hour adaptation of Stephen King’s time-travel novel about the Kennedy Assassination. The miniseries follows high school English teacher Jake Epping, who travels back in time to try to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas. J.J. Abrams is also working on the project. -HBO has confirmed that Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in the second season of True Detective. The official logline for the new season is, “Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.” They also confirmed the season season will be eight episodes and shoot in California with Justin Lin directing the first two episodes of the new season. Colin Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, “a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.” Vince Vaughn will play Frank Semyon, “a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.” True Detective will shoot later this fall. -Rachel McAdams is said to be locking down a lead role in season 2 of HBO’s True Detective. Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) is also rumored to be the last main cast member. -Craig Robinson will return in Brooklyn Nine-Nine as the Pontiac Bandit. -Syfy has renewed both Dominion and Defiance for upcoming seasons. Dominion will return for a second season consisting of 13-episodes. Defiance will return for a third season also consisting of 13-episodes. -CBS has decided to continue double-pumping Big Bang Theory on Monday nights for the next three weeks. Originally Big Bang Theory was set to air two episodes on Monday at 8 and 8:30pm this week only before downshifting to one episode at 8pm and new episodes of Mom at 8:30pm. But now two episodes of Big Bang Theory — the second will be a repeat — will run on Sept 29, Oct 6, and Oct 13 with the Mom return pushed until Oct 30. Also, once everything is fixed Mom will return to Thursdays and The Millers will air on Mondays instead. Outlander will return to Starz for the second half of its freshman season on April 4. The midseason finale is set to air at 9pm on Saturday (Sept 27) with eight new episodes following in 2015. -Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) has landed a recurring role on the reboot of The Odd Couple. She will play Dani, assistant to Matthew Perry’s Oscar. She has replaced Sarah Baker, who was let go shortly after the show was ordered to series. This does not mean that she is leaving Community‘s sixth season reboot on Yahoo Screen and is expected to return to the show in some capacity. Since they have different shooting schedules, she could conceivably do both. -Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under, Dexter) is returning to TV in Stanley Kubrick’s unproduced drama God Fearing Man. It will be produced as a miniseries, with eOne shopping it to networks. -Danny Masterson (That ’70s Show) will have a guest starring role on USA’s series Royal Pains in which he will play the brother of returning guest Kyle Howard (My Boys). Kyle Howard first appeared on season 3 as Dr. Paul Van Dyke but left to start his own concierge practice in Miami. Paul will come back fro the season 6 finale as a patient of HankMed’s. Masterson will play Paul’s brother, Danny Van Dyke, a wealthy hedge fund manager who needs a kidney transplant but is reluctant to accept his brother’s organ. -Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy) is set to executive produce a new series Debt, a satire of the 2008 financial meltdown in New York based on Rachel Carey’s 2013 novel of the same name. The project for ABC Family begins a new trend about programs targeted towards older women. The story follows a young woman in her 20s who works as an SAT tutor to pay off her college loans and discovers that everyone she knows is in somebody’s “debt.” The series is in very early pre-production and has not even hired a writer yet. http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/08/01/ellen-pompeo-debt-abc-family-drama/

-Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) will play Deputy Chief Madeline Wuntch as a guest-starring arc on Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine for its second season. Deputy Chief Wuntch is a longtime foil of Andre Braugher’s Captain Holt and she aims to take down the 9-9. Brooklyn Nine-Nine begins its second season on Sunday, September 28 at 8:30/7:30c on Fox. -TV Land has also ordered Jim Gaffigan’s CBS sitcom, The Gaffigan Show, pilot to series. -Nickelodeon has ordered a live-action comedy 100 Things to Do Before High School to series which will consist of 26 half-hour episodes. 100 Things to Do follows three best friends as they navigate the highs and lows of middle school, with the help of a bucket list of adventures that help them overcome class cliques, terrifying bullies, and clueless teachers. -Nickelodeon is adapting School of Rock for the silver screen! Based of the 2003 Jack Black comedy movie of the same name, the show will follow the misadventures of Dewey Finn, a down-on-his luck musician who fakes his way into a substitute teaching job at a prep school where he shows a group of classically-trained kids the way of Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. The show is on track to air next spring with production beginning in the fall. Aquarius, Nashville Tour, The Killing, and more

-The stars of the show Nashville are going on tour.
