Humans, Supergirl, 11/22/63, True Detective and more!

New blog post part 2!

-AMC has picked up the UK’s show Humans, a co-production deal between Channel 4 and Xbox Entertainment Studios,  but was dropped by Xbox Entertainment Studios over the summer as part of Microsofts’s plan to cut 18,000 jobs. Channel 4 was looking for a U.S. partner and found it in AMC. Production of the sci-fi drama will start this fall for a 2015 premiere. The show is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’–a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart. In the hope of transforming the way they live, one strained suburban family purchases a refurbished synth only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences. The UK show is an adaptation of the Swedish series Real Humans

-CBS has given a series commitment to an hour-long drama about Kara Zor-El, the DC Comics heroines who escaped the planet Krypton amid its destruction. Having hid all this time on Earth the powers she share with “her famous cousin”, 24-year-old Kara decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and “be the here she was meant to be.” The pilot was penned by Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow). The show will apparently be called Supergirl

-Hulu has placed a direct-to-series order for 11/22/63, a nine-hour adaptation of Stephen King’s time-travel novel about the Kennedy Assassination. The miniseries follows high school English teacher Jake Epping, who travels back in time to try to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas. J.J. Abrams is also working on the project. A premiere has not been set yet.

-HBO has confirmed that Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in the second season of True Detective. The official logline for the new season is, “Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.” They also confirmed the season season will be eight episodes and shoot in California with Justin Lin directing the first two episodes of the new season. Colin Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, “a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.” Vince Vaughn will play Frank Semyon, “a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.” True Detective will shoot later this fall. No premiere date is set but a summer return seems likely.

-Rachel McAdams is said to be locking down a lead role in season 2 of HBO’s True Detective. Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) is also rumored to be the last main cast member. Both Kitsch and McAdams are expected to play cops alongside Colin Farrell.

-Craig Robinson will return in Brooklyn Nine-Nine as the Pontiac Bandit. In the Christmas episode, which is slated to air in early to mid-December, Jake (Andy Samberg) reluctantly joins forces with the charming criminal he’d been pursuing for years in order to take down a drug kingpin.

-Syfy has renewed both Dominion and Defiance for upcoming seasons. Dominion will return for a second season consisting of 13-episodes. Defiance will return for a third season also consisting of 13-episodes. Both will return with new episodes in 2015.

-CBS has decided to continue double-pumping Big Bang Theory on Monday nights for the next three weeks. Originally Big Bang Theory was set to air two episodes on Monday at 8 and 8:30pm this week only before downshifting to one episode at 8pm and new episodes of Mom at 8:30pm. But now two episodes of Big Bang Theory — the second will be a repeat — will run on Sept 29, Oct 6, and Oct 13 with the Mom return pushed until Oct 30. Also, once everything is fixed Mom will return to Thursdays and The Millers will air on Mondays instead. This is all to provide a strong lead-in for the new drama Scorpion. The full plan is in the link.

Outlander will return to Starz for the second half of its freshman season on April 4. The midseason finale is set to air at 9pm on Saturday (Sept 27) with eight new episodes following in 2015. The show has already been renewed for a second season.

Red Band Society, Scorpion, CSI:Cyber, Saturday Night Live and lots more!

I have a lot of stuff to go over since I was absent last week. This will be split up into two different blog posts.

-TNT is set to team up with Mark Wahlberg for a drama series based on the 2007 conspiracy thriller Shooter. John Hlavin (Underworld: Awakening, The Shield) will write the series, now in development, and will executive produce with Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson. The story centers on a marksman, former U.S. Marine Scout Sniper Bob Lee Swagger (Wahlberg), who is coaxed back into action only to be framed for murder and goes on the run. The movie was based off the book Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter.

-Mandy Moore (Saved, A Walk to Remember) has booked a big role on Fox’s new show Red Band Society. She will play Erin Grace, the chief of staff at Ocean Park Hospital who also is Dr. McAndrew’s ex-fiancee. Red Band Society airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Fox.

-Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Saddam, 24) has landed a guest starring role on CBS new drama Scorpion. She will play Dr. Cassandra Davis, a psychologist assigned to evaluate Walter and team following a chaotic and costly conclusion to one of their cases. Scorpion airs Mondays at 9pm on CBS.

-Luke Perry (90210) is set to join the newest CSI spinoff CSI:Cyber in a potentially recurring role. He will play Nick Dalton, a former FBI agent who was destined to run the cyber unit in Washington DC. After a classified falling out, Dalton set his sights on becoming a “futurist” for the private sector. Apparently Dalton will hold many secrets to Avery’s backstory. CBS is eyeing a midseason launch for the new show.

-Pete Davidson has joined Saturday Night Live as the only new featured player to join the show in its upcoming 40th season.

-Judd Apatow is working with Netflix to create a new relationship comedy TV series called Love, that already has a two season straight-to-series pickup. The show will star Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper) and Gillian Jacobs (Community) which follows Gus (Rust) and Mickey (Jacobs) as they navigate the exhilaration and humiliations of intimacy, commitment, and other things they were hoping to avoid. Season 1 will consist of 10 episodes which will debut in 2016 while season 2 will have 12 episodes and debut in 2017.

Big Brother has been renewed for two more seasons. The 17th cycle will air next summer and the 18th cycle in summer 2016. Julie Chen will remain the host. Big Brother After Dark on TVGN has also been renewed for next summer.

-IFC has renewed Maron for a third season. Production is set to begin this fall with 13 new half-hour episodes. It is set to return in the spring of 2015.

-NBC with the help of Scot Armstrong (Old School, The Hangover Part II), who is writing the show, is creating a TV series based on 1990 comedy Problem Child. The movies features John Ritter and Amy Yasbeck as a couple conned into adopting a troubled 7-year-old boy who wreaks havoc in their lives and leaves a path of destruction. The single-camera comedy is currently in development.

Saturday Night Live has a new announcer. After Don Pardo’s death, they have asked Darrel Hammond to be the show’s new official announcer. SNL kicks off season 40 on September 27 with host Chris Pratt and Musical Guest Ariana Grande. Then on October 4 there is Sarah Silverman and Maroon 5. And then Bill Hader and Hozier on October 11.

-Sam Richardson, who played Richard in a few episodes of Veep has been joined the cast as a series regular for season 4. He will be joining Selina’s staff as an aide. Veep is expected to return for its fourth season in April.

The rest will be a separate blog post!
