Casting news, Sons of Liberty, Penny Dreadful, and more!

TONIGHT on TV–June 5, 2014:

  • Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night (8pm, ABC)
  • NBA Finals Game 1 (9pm, ABC)

-Constance Zimmer will star in Lifetime’s new series Un-Real which focuses on the behind-the-scenes look of the chaos surrounding a competition dating reality series. She will star as the dispassionate executive producer, replacing Magyn Price (who played the role in the pilot). As of now, there are only 10 episodes so far. The series focuses on Rachel (Shiri Appleby), “a young staffer whose sole job is to manipulate her relationships with and among the contestants to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage the program’s executive producer demands.” The show should air later in 2014. 

-USA’s Benched has added Molly Shannon, Chris Parnell, and Yvette Nicole Brown to its growing list of guest stars. The show centers on Nina (Eliza Coupe), a dedicated, career-driven corporate attorney who has a public nervous breakdown after getting passed up for an expected promotion and finds herself working as a public defender. Shannon will play Judge Conner, a mature judge. Parnell will play Mitch, a glad-handing public defender, and Brown will play Donna, a head clerk in the courthouse.

-A new trailer for Netflix’s new original series BoJack Horseman has been released and its release date of all 12 episodes of the first season has been set for August 22. The animated series focuses on the equine BoJack (Will Arnett), a faded 1990s sitcom star living a depressing life of self-loathing, booze, and crummy relationships in an odd world where humans and animals interact as equals. He hangs out with his human friend, Todd Chavez (Aaron Paul) and talks to his ex-love lover and agent (who also happens to be a cat) the Purrfect Princess Carolyn (Amy Sedaris). -Showtime has added Laila Robbins and Corey Stoll has recurring characters on Homeland’s upcoming fourth season set for a premiere this fall. Robbins will play Martha Boyd, the U.S. Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and Stoll will play Sandy Bachman, the CIA Chief of Station in Pakistan. They have also added Suraj Sharma as Aayan Ibrahim, a Pakistani medical student who crosses paths with Carrie Mathison. The role is described as heavily recurring.

-Brian Van Holt will be joining Syfy’s Ascension. The series is about a starship secretly launched from Earth in the year 1963, sending hundreds of men, women, and children to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, the mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship’s population to question the true nature of their mission. Holt will play the ship’s captain, William Denninger. The 6-hour drama is set to premiere in November on Syfy!

-Showtime has picked up Penny Dreadful for a second season, consisting of 10 episodes, set to air in 2015. Penny Dreadful airs Sundays at 10pm ET/PT on Showtime.

-Lifetime has greenlit four unscripted series (Born In the WildGirlfriend InterventionKosher Soul, and Threads) and three reality series which are in development (SmileWorst Stylist Ever, and Ugly Models). For a description of each show, check out the link! 

-The cast of History’s Sons of Liberty has been revealed. The six-part miniseries will follow Sam Adams, John Adams, and Paul Revere as they band together in secrecy to spark a revolution and make America a nation.

-Darron Aronofsky is adapting the futuristic MaddAddam book trilogy, by Margaret Atwood, as an HBO series. The book/series is set in the mid-21st century in  a world where corporations have taken over for governments and the genetic modification of organisms is perversely ubiquitous. It centers on the events before and after a Waterless Flood that wipes out almost all of the world’s population and follows an extensive cast of characters, including those responsible for the apocalypse and those struggling to survive it.

-AMC is adapting the novel The Son, by Phillip Meyer, into a drama series. The book/series focuses on a a multi-generational epic telling the story of America’s birth as a superpower through the bloody rise and fall of one Texas oil empire.

-Kellan Lutz and Malin Akerman are set to return to HBO’s The Comeback. They will reprise their roles as romantically linked Chris and Juna but neither will be in all 6 episodes of the limited series in the fall.
