TONIGHT on TV–May 20, 2014:

-In my last blog post I mentioned that there would be a docuseries about Michael Sam on OWN, well later Friday night, they announced that the project would be postponed, “allowing Michael the best opprotunity to achieve his dreams of making the team.”

-Michael Weatherly has closed a 2-year deal with CBS to return to NCIS for seasons 12 and 13.

-AT&T has finalized its deal to acquire DirectTV for $48.5 billion. The deal will allow AT&T to boost broadband speeds and expand its high speed broadcast service to customer locations (even rural areas not currently wired) which is to be completed within four years. DirectTV customers can retain their standalone service packages for three years.

-Youtube has acquired videogame-streaming company Twitch for more than $1 billion.

-Lauren Ambrose has joined USA Network’s Dig, a six-episode event series airing this fall. It centers on Peter Connelly, an FBI agent currently stationed in Jerusalem who, while investigating the murder of an American archeologist, uncovers a conspiracy 2,000 years in the making. Ambrose will play Debbie, a dedicated follower of evangelist Ted Billingham (played by David Costabile) who spends most of her time looking after a fellow disciple, 13-year-old Josh (Zen McGrath) who suddenly disappears which makes Debbie begin to question the beliefs and choices that have led her to where she is.

-Disney Channel has renewed Jessie for a fourth season which will premiere in January 2015.

-Kristen Bell is going to host the 2014 CMT Music Awards by herself after previously hosting with Toby Keith in 2012 and Jason Aldean in 2013. The 2014 CMT Music Awards are on June 4 at 8pm EST (broadcating live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena) on CMT.

-TNT is developing a spin-off of Major Crimes (which is a spin-off of The Closer). It will focus on franchise vet Jon Tenney’s FBI agent character, Special Agent Fritz Howard. The spin-off characters will be featured in the seventh episode of Major Crimes upcoming third season which premieres June 9.

-Fox’s Enlisted will be airing its final remaining episodes (one episode per week) starting Sunday, June 1, at 7/6c.

-The Teen Choice Awards will air live on Sunday, August 10, at 8pm from UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.

-OWN has ordered a new docuseries centered around Michael Sam. The series will follow the him as he prepares to earn a spot on the Rams. The docuseries is still untitled.

-Ryan Murphy stated that the rumors about Naya Rivera being fired from Glee is untrue. Both Naya and Lea Michele will be back the final season. He also stated, “Naya’s coming back next year, Lea’s coming back next year, anybody ever in that cast has an open invitation to come back and finish the character they so beautifully started.”

-The CW has unveiled their 2014 Primetime schedule which can be found on my page Fall Schedules 2014-2015.

-The trailers for The Flash and Jane the Virgin have been released. iZombie and The Messengers have been pushed to midseason (along with Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast).

-T.R. Knight has joined Amazon’s Hysteria. He will play Dr. Logan Harlow’s brother, Carter James Harlow, “a fiercely intense man who’s been on death row since he was 19 years old and is two months away from execution.”

-Adrienne C. Moore has been promoted to a series regular on the third season of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black. She recurred the first two seasons as Black Cindy.

-Gilles Marini is joining Devious Maids season finale set to air on Sunday July 13. He will play opposite Roselyn Sanchez. Devious Maids airs Sunday at 10/9c on Lifetime.

Arrow has promoted John Barrowman to a series regular for the upcoming third season.

-The final season of Parks and Recreation will consist of 13 episodes.

-ABC has changed Rookie Blue’s premiere date to June 19 at 9/8c instead of July 17 at 10pm. 

-The coveted after Superbowl show will be The Blacklist on Feb 1. The episode will be a two-parter and the second part will air on Feb 5 when the drama moves permanently to Thursday.

-Jane Krakowski has joined the cast of the new NBC comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in a recurring role. She will play a wealthy Upper West Side woman who hires Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) as a nanny.

-Cory Michael Smith (Edward/Nygma), Victoria Cartagena (detective Renee Montoya) and Andrew Stewart-Jones (detective Crispus Allen) have all been promoted to series regulars on Fox’s new show Gotham

The Simpson and Family Guy will have a crossover episode called “The Simpsons Guy.” and will be an hour long episode airing in September. 

-TBS has renewed Conan through 2018.

-ABC’s Nashville has been renewed for a third season.

-CBS’s The Mentalist has been renewed for season 7.

-CBS has canceled The Crazy OnesFriends With Better LivesBad TeacherIntelligence, and Hostages

-TBS has renewed Cougar Town for a sixth and final season.

-NBC has renewed Parenthood for a sixth and final season which will consist of 13-episodes. Parks and Recreation will also have its final season this fall. It has not, however, been added to the NBC schedule so it may be a midseason run.

-TBS has canceled Men at Work.

-Fox has ordered a New Year’s Eve Special Pitbull’s New Year’s Revolution. The special will air on Wednesday from 8-10pm ET live (CT/MT/PT tape-delayed) and is trying to compete with ABC’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest and NBC’s New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly

-NBC has set Saturday Night Live’s 40th Anniversary Special which will air on Feb 15 during the February sweep. It will include highlights from the four decades of SNL and will feature a slew of alumni stopping by.

-Larry Wilmore will succeed Stephen Colbert in a Jon Stewart-produced show on Comedy Central. The show will be called The Minority Report and will launch in January 2015.
